To target your customers more effectively, use the Business Classification
Codes included with every DBA Report to narrow the list down to just the businesses
you expect the most return from.
The Business Classification Codes describe certain situations we have seen various businesses
go through when they are filing an assumed name. These situations are
informative about what is happening to the company and can be leveraged
to target situations that may provide an opportunity to sell your
product or service to them. The following is a list of classification
codes and some suggestions as to who could benefit from
marketing to businesses that fall into this category.
| Code |
Description |
How You Can Use It |
| Code 1 |
This is a
genuine new business as far as can be discerned from the assumed
name filing |
This is the
most common assumed name filing. ALWAYS at least send introduction
marketing letters to these businesses offering your product or
service. |
| Code 2 |
This assumed
name filing is for an existing business that is merely changing
ownership. This classification shows only the newly registered
business name and owner. The previous owner has Abandoned the
previous filing record. |
This
classification can provide opportunities for businesses in the same
way a newly formed business can. New business owners usually ‘clean
house’ or closely evaluate current vendors and service providers.
This classification can still provide a good return on marketing
efforts. |
| Code 3 |
This assumed
name filing is for an existing business that is moving and/or changing
their business address. |
This assumed
name filing would be a great target for companies selling furniture,
insurance policies, printing services, alarm installation/service or
anything else having to do with a business's facilities setup or
location/address. |
| Code 4 |
This assumed
name filing is for an existing business that is merely changing its
name. |
This assumed
name filing would be a great target for companies selling printing,
uniform, legal or other services dealing with company names. You
could perhaps acknowledge the new business name and mention that you
deal with companies all the time that are going through these
changes. |
| Code 5 |
This assumed
name filing is for an existing business that is incorporating. |
Companies that
incorporate are well-established businesses that are probably set as
far as most products and services with a few exceptions: marketing
is a new focus for many companies going through an incorporation
process due to the new demands for business generation to keep up
with new taxes and legal fees associated with it. Also, legal and
accounting needs are more prevalent in a corporation. Great
opportunities for specific businesses. |
| Code 6 |
This assumed
name filing is for an existing corporation registering additional
DBA or opening new location |
Either way,
just registering a new DBA or opening a new location, it would be a
good idea for your normal marketing campaigns to include this
situation in case the corporation is looking for new vendors for
products and services in the area. If a new location then vendors having to do
with a businesses facilities setup should target these
classifications – similar to classification code 3. |
| Code 7 |
This assumed
name filing is for a business owner that is registering multiple
business names. Many times the names are variations that are for a
single business and are not separate entities. |
This really is
the only classification code that we can’t find a useful approach to
target. We really included this classification code to keep you, our
subscribers from sending multiple marketing letters to the same
owner for different businesses. You may want to only target one of
the businesses being registered by this same owner. If you see this
classification code in a DBA Report, look elsewhere in the report
for the same owner and choose which business name to target for your
product or service. |
